Brain-Computer and Computer-Brain Interfaces: applications for detecting and adjusting brain activity
The detection and influencing of brain activity is one of the most rapidly developing research areas at present. It offers the possibility of applications that until recently appeared to be science-fiction, for example computer games that can be steered by thoughts through to so-called mental prostheses and treatments for disorders that appeared to be untreatable.
BrainGain is a Dutch research consortium made up of researchers, companies and potential users of Brain-Computer and Computer-Brain interfaces. The programme started in September 2007 and is being financed by SmartMix, an initiative to support applied research. BrainGain is investigating applications for patients as well as healthy users, and its aim is to ultimately use its research results for tangible products and with this to create an economic impulse as well.
